Microbiome Engineering
Microbiome-based therapeutics have moved from concept to FDA-approved products with broader pipeline expansion. The session covers VOWST (live oral microbiota) and Rebyota in C. difficile infection, defined-consortia therapeutics beyond CDI for IBD and oncology, engineered probiotics including Synlogic for PKU and hyperammonemia, host-microbiome interactions in immunotherapy response, postbiotics and bacterial metabolites, and the FDA Live Biotherapeutic Products framework. Discussion addresses microbiome modulation in cardiovascular disease (TMAO pathway), the link between microbiome and GLP-1 response, microbiome-based diagnostics, and the regulatory considerations for engineered organism therapeutics released into patients.
